Programme Introduction

The Institute of Certified Bookkeepers (ICB) is a professional institute operating within the financial sector, which is one of the largest sectors in the South African economy. There is a significant demand for qualified professionals in this sector, and this scarcity of skills is not unique to finance; it is prevalent across all industries in the economy.

 

This qualification has been formulated as a comprehensive set of essential competencies in Accounting, applicable across a broad spectrum of accounting roles within diverse organizations. Individuals undergoing this program will be proficient in executing the Accounting function within small enterprises and providing assistance to Accountants and Financial Managers in medium and large-scale organizations.

 

Upon successful completion of this program, participants will attain the designation of an Accounting Technician and Certified Tax Technician. They will possess the skills to function effectively within the accounting domain, collaborate with management, and qualify as a recognized tax practitioner. Additionally, they will have a profound understanding of accounting principles, taxation, auditing, and business law, enabling them to navigate the complexities of tax structures for both individuals and corporations.

  • National Certificate in Senior Bookkeeping or

  • Non-accounting professional qualification

Complete an online application form at www.icb.org.za  or contact us for ICB registration form. Complete a separate registration form.

Programme Objectives

  • As part of this program, participants have the opportunity to request approval from the ICB for enrollment in the Certified Technical Financial Accountant (CTFAIcb(SA)) designation, leading to the acquisition of relevant membership benefits.

  • Individuals can seek registration with the South African Institute of Tax Professionals (SAIT) as a Certified Tax Technician (CTT(SA)) to obtain a tax practitioner number, enabling them to handle monthly SARS and income tax returns.

  • Participants are encouraged to pursue further studies towards obtaining the NQF Level 6 National Diploma in Financial Accounting.

Subjects covered

Income Tax Returns

This module covers various aspects of income tax, including gross income, exempt income, allowable deductions, fringe benefits, and allowances. It also explores topics such as employees’ tax and provisional tax, taxation of non-residents, taxation of business entities, turnover tax, completing tax returns, capital gains tax, donations tax, estate duty, and the role of SARS (South African Revenue Service) and Tax Practitioners.

 

Business Law and Accounting Control

This section addresses the implicit principles in business, the formal regulations governing business operations, personal finance management, internal control concepts in accounting systems, the administration of accounting systems, inventory control within accounting systems, analytical review in accounting, liquidation, and executor’s accounts, as well as the fundamental tenets of corporate governance.

Examination Sessions

Evaluation sessions involve the assessment of learners using Portfolios of Evidence (PoE), and they have the flexibility to select from a range of available assessment dates throughout the year.

Assessment / Certification / Awarding Body

Learners must complete module assessments and submit PoE projects. The ICB serves as the Certification body for the National Certification in Bookkeeping Qualification.

Career Progression

After successfully finishing this program, participants are eligible to progress to the ICB Certified Financial Accountant program and are entitled to use the designation: Certified Technical Financial Accountant (CTFAIcb SA).

Additional Costs

Each year, individuals returning for further education are required to submit a yearly membership subscription payment of R470.00 (based on 2024 pricing). Those desiring to utilize the ICB designation CSBIcb(SA) must enrol as ICB members and fulfil the associated fee.
