Introduction

Circuit breakers play an important role in the safe distribution of electrical power. The equipment needs to be operated, maintained, and installed in a safe manner securing continuity of supply to consumers.

This course is non-accredited.

• Apply updated knowledge and skill in MV/HV circuit breakers and be able to explain switchgear in a network context
• Selection of proper specifications of circuit breakers and switchgears
• Methods of system earthing, protection requirements and fault-finding techniques
• Appreciation of the use of latest technology in switchgear testing, inspection, and troubleshooting
• The need for routine inspection, decent maintenance of equipment and precise record keeping
• The acceptable use of relevant testing and measuring instruments
• Management of power transformer breakdowns to minimize disruption
• Explaining the configuration and function of common equipment found in a substation
• Understand switchgear asset management, tripping devices, maintenance, testing and be able to apply switchgear diagnostics
