The Institute of Certified Bookkeepers (ICB) is a professional institute operating within the financial sector, which is one of the largest sectors in the South African economy. There is a significant demand for qualified professionals in this sector, and this scarcity of skills is not unique to finance; it is prevalent across all industries in the economy.
This qualification has been designed to encompass a broad array of essential skills in the field of Accounting, making it applicable to various accounting roles across diverse organizations. The objective of this qualification is to prepare learners for undertaking accounting responsibilities in small organizations and offering assistance to Accountants and Financial Managers in medium and large organizations. Upon successful completion of the program, learners will possess the ability to conduct monthly and annual bookkeeping, account for asset disposals, carry out year-end adjustments, analyse financial statements, comprehend cash flow, compile basic management accounts, and possess a functional understanding of cost accounting, financial management, and business ethics.

Completion of Grade 11 (Standard 9) or its equivalent
Demonstrated competence in the learning areas (1-4) outlined in the Certified Junior Bookkeeper qualification.

Graduates who successfully complete the program can pursue further studies leading to the NQF Level 5 Diploma in Technical Financial Accounting and the NQF Level 6 National Diploma in Financial Accounting.

Financial Statements
Offers expertise in handling the disposal of depreciable assets, making year-end adjustments, and preparing and analysing financial statements for sole proprietorships, partnerships, close corporations, and companies. It encompasses an in-depth examination of cash flow statements.
Cost and Management Accounting
Overview of accounting for a manufacturing business, including break-even analysis, cost-volume-profit analysis, budgeting, standard costing, financial management, and considerations of business ethics.
Evaluation sessions involve the assessment of learners using Portfolios of Evidence (PoE), and they have the flexibility to select from a range of available assessment dates throughout the year.
Learners must complete module assessments and submit PoE projects. The ICB serves as the Certification body for the National Certification in Bookkeeping Qualification.
Upon the successful conclusion of this program, participants have the opportunity to advance to the ICB Certified Senior Bookkeeper designation. They are entitled to use the credential “Certified Senior Bookkeeper CSBIcb (SA)” after their name.
Each year, individuals returning for further education are required to submit a yearly membership subscription payment of R470.00 (based on 2024 pricing). Those desiring to utilize the ICB designation CSBIcb(SA) must enrol as ICB members and fulfil the associated fee.
