Course Introduction

This highly interactive and practical masterclass is designed for professionals who want to deepen their understanding of financial markets and strengthen their investment decision-making. Over five days, participants gain a thorough grounding in modern investment strategies, asset allocation frameworks, and portfolio management methods. The programme blends theory with hands-on exercises, real-world case studies, and practitioner insights, so that participants can apply best practice and advanced techniques with confidence.

The investment environment is demanding. Rates, inflation, and currencies move quickly, markets can be concentrated and illiquid, and investors face pressure to deliver returns while managing risk, costs, and regulation. In South Africa, retirement funds invest within the limits of Regulation 28 of the Pension Funds Act, which sets limits by asset class, including offshore assets, infrastructure, and private equity. Across Africa, investors must also deal with frontier markets, currency risk, and limited liquidity. Sustainability and ESG considerations are moving from the margins into mainstream decision-making, and private markets and new asset types are changing the choices open to investors.

The course follows the investment process from end to end: understanding strategies and markets, setting objectives and allocating assets, constructing and optimising portfolios, managing risk and measuring performance, and using alternatives, international assets, and ESG in the portfolio. Participants work through exercises and cases using African and global examples, and finish by building and defending a portfolio.

  • Practical Exercise: write the objectives and constraints of an investment policy statement for a retirement fund and for an individual investor, and compare them
Module 2: Markets, Behaviour, and Anomalies
  • The Efficient Market Hypothesis versus behavioural finance
  • Common investor biases: overconfidence, loss aversion, herding, and anchoring, and how they affect individuals, advisers, and trustees
  • Exploring market anomalies, such as the size, value, and momentum effects, and whether they last
  • How African and frontier markets differ: concentration, liquidity, market depth, and information quality
  • Market cycles and regimes: what changes when rates and inflation change
  • Case Study: a market bubble or sell-off, and how behaviour, not fundamentals, drove the decisions of many investors

Day 2 — Asset Allocation Principles
Module 3: The Theory of Asset Allocation
  • The critical role of asset allocation in portfolio success
  • Modern Portfolio Theory (MPT): risk, return, diversification, and the efficient frontier
  • The Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM): beta, the market risk premium, and its limits
  • Arbitrage Pricing Theory (APT) and multi-factor thinking
  • What the theory assumes, where it breaks down, and how practitioners adapt it
  • Practical Exercise: calculate the expected return and risk of a two-asset and a three-asset portfolio, and plot the efficient frontier
Module 4: Strategic and Tactical Asset Allocation
  • Strategic asset allocation: setting long-term targets, ranges, and benchmarks
  • Tactical asset allocation: when and how to deviate, and the evidence on whether it adds value
  • Liability-driven thinking for pension funds and insurers
  • Regulatory limits: Regulation 28 of the Pension Funds Act, including the limits on offshore assets, infrastructure, private equity, hedge funds, and single entities, and the ban on crypto assets
  • Asset allocation under different regimes: high inflation, low growth, and rising rates
  • Case Study: setting a strategic asset allocation for a retirement fund within Regulation 28, and testing it against two market scenarios

Day 3 — Portfolio Construction Essentials
Module 5: Diversification and the Construction Process
  • Principles and benefits of diversification, and its limits when correlations rise in a crisis
  • A step-by-step portfolio construction process: objectives, allocation, selection, implementation, and review
  • Understanding investment vehicles: equities, bonds, money market instruments, unit trusts (mutual funds), exchange-traded funds (ETFs), and more

  • Currency risk and its management: hedging, natural hedges, and the cost of hedging
  • ESG and sustainable investing: approaches (exclusion, integration, and impact), data, and greenwashing
  • The disclosure environment: sustainability reporting under the international standards (IFRS S1 and S2) is expected to expand in South Africa, and the JSE has issued guidance, so investors should expect more consistent data
