Course Introduction

The Learning and Development Facilitator Skills Programme equips individuals with the essential knowledge and practical skills required to facilitate learning effectively in workplace and occupational contexts. The role of a facilitator is to guide, support and manage learning in a way that ensures learners gain the competencies they need in their specific occupations or trades.

 

This programme focuses on understanding the learning and development environment, using effective facilitation techniques, and delivering learning interventions that meet both organisational and learner needs.

Course Duration

  • Classroom / contact time: 5 days
  • Official total programme duration: 46 days
  • Workplace Experience component: approximately 12 weeks, confirmed independently, during which learners gain supervised exposure to facilitating a learning and development session in an authentic work environment, ahead of Portfolio of Evidence submission.

Entry Requirements

An NQF Level 4 qualification, including Communication.

  • Learners are introduced to the legal and policy framework that guides occupational learning in South Africa, including the Skills Development Act, SETA structures and quality assurance bodies.

  • Legislative and regulatory frameworks for learning and development
  • Understanding the roles of various stakeholders (SETA, QCTO, employers, providers)
  • The relationship between occupational qualifications and skills programmes
  • Module: KM-01 — The Statutory Learning and Development Environment (Credits: 8)

2. Facilitating Learning in Occupational Contexts
  • This section prepares learners to facilitate learning using appropriate methods and tools, with an understanding of how to manage the learning process for adult learners in workplace contexts.
Key focus areas:
  • Adult learning principles and outcomes-based education
  • Structuring and delivering learning sessions
  • Managing group dynamics and learner engagement
  • Using learning resources effectively
  • Module: KM-04 — Facilitation of Learning in Occupational Contexts (Credits: 8)

3. Applying Facilitation Techniques and Delivering Sessions
  • This component focuses on practical facilitation using different styles, approaches and tools — planning, delivering and reflecting on a learning session in a real or simulated occupational setting.
Key focus areas:
  • Selecting and using facilitation styles based on learner needs
  • Adapting methods for different learning outcomes and environments
  • Hands-on delivery of sessions with feedback and reflection
  • Adjusting facilitation in response to learner progress and challenges
  • Modules: PM-04 — Facilitate Different Methodologies, Styles, and Techniques (Credits: 12); WM-04 — Facilitate an Occupational Learning Session (Credits: 8)

Certification

Learners who successfully complete the programme will be eligible to write the FISA examination. Upon passing, they will be awarded a Certificate of Competence along with a Statement of Results, both aligned with QCTO standards.
