Course Introduction

Ore handling, which may account for 30-60% of the total delivered price of raw materials, covers the processes of transportation, storage, feeding, washing and/or reclaiming the valuable commodity en route to, or during, its various stages of treatment. The necessity for storage arises from the fact that different parts of the operation of mining and milling are performed at different rates, some being intermittent and some continuous, some being subject to frequent interruption for repair, and others being essentially batch processes. In our current economic climate, improving safety and increasing efficiency in coal stockpile is imperative. Frequent reference will be made to historical incidents and recurring problem areas in stockpiles. Techniques for analyzing and mitigating process safety hazards applicable to coal and material handling will be reviewed. Integration of the concepts covered to achieve a measured approach to Process Safety Engineering is a key aim of this course. Exercises and group projects will be utilized throughout the course to emphasize the key learning points.
