Day 1 — Problem Identification and Investigation
Module 1: Problem Identification and Investigation
  • Understanding problems and problem solving
  • Identifying workplace problems, and recognising symptoms versus underlying causes
  • Defining the problem clearly in a short problem statement
  • Gathering relevant information from data, records, and people
  • Investigating causes with common techniques, such as the 5 Whys, fishbone (cause-and-effect) diagrams, and simple charts
  • Analysing and interpreting information, and avoiding common thinking biases such as jumping to conclusions
  • Identifying the stakeholders affected by the problem
  • Practical Exercise: write a clear problem statement and a cause analysis for a real workplace problem

Day 2 — Decision-Making Processes
Module 2: Decision-Making Processes
  • Principles of effective decision making, and the steps in a decision-making process
  • Generating possible solutions and identifying alternative courses of action, individually and in groups
  • Evaluating alternatives against criteria, considering risks and consequences, and comparing advantages and disadvantages
  • Selecting the most appropriate solution, using a simple decision matrix
  • Consulting relevant stakeholders, and making decisions at the appropriate level of authority
  • Using data and AI assistants responsibly in decisions: checking accuracy, protecting personal and confidential information, and keeping accountability with the decision-maker
  • Practical Exercise: compare three options for a workplace problem using a decision matrix and justify your choice

Day 3 — Solution Implementation and Evaluation
