Training Outline

Day 1 — Introduction to Lean Six Sigma and the DMAIC Methodology
Morning Session (4 Hours) — Lean Six Sigma and DMAIC Overview
  • Objective: introduce the basic concepts of Lean Six Sigma and the DMAIC framework.
  • Introduction to Lean: focus on eliminating waste and improving flow
  • Introduction to Six Sigma: focus on reducing variation to improve quality
  • The synergy between Lean and Six Sigma, and how combining both methodologies drives optimal results
  • DMAIC overview: Define, Measure, Analyse, Improve, Control, and its use in problem-solving
  • The role of a Yellow Belt in DMAIC projects: supporting teams with data collection, process documentation, and identifying issues
  • Practical Exercise: Group discussion and identification of a common process issue using the DMAIC framework
Afternoon Session (4 Hours) — Define Phase
  • Objective: explore the Define phase and begin working with key Lean Six Sigma tools.
  • Project charter: key components and the importance of setting clear project goals
  • Voice of the Customer (VOC): understanding customer needs and expectations
  • SIPOC diagram: mapping suppliers, inputs, process, outputs, and customers
  • Problem statement and goal statement: articulating clear, concise project goals and problem definitions
  • Practical Exercise: Create a SIPOC diagram for a sample process, ensuring it includes all relevant stakeholders

Day 2 — Measure and Analyse Phases
Morning Session (4 Hours) — Measure Phase
  • Objective: introduce the Measure phase, focusing on data collection and basic metrics.
  • Data collection: understanding the types of data and the importance of accurate data collection
  • Types of data: continuous vs. discrete data
  • Measurement Systems Analysis (MSA): ensuring measurement systems are reliable and accurate
  • Key metrics and KPIs: defining key performance indicators to track process performance
  • Practical Exercise: Collect sample data for a process and create a basic data collection plan
Afternoon Session (4 Hours) — Analyse Phase
  • Objective: understand basic analysis tools for identifying problems and opportunities for improvement.
  • Basic statistical tools: an introduction to mean, median, mode, and standard deviation
  • Control charts: a basic understanding of control charts to monitor process stability
  • Pareto analysis: the 80/20 rule in identifying the most critical issues
  • Root cause analysis tools: the 5 Whys and Fishbone Diagram (Ishikawa) for identifying underlying causes of problems
  • Practical Exercise: Work through a simple Pareto analysis based on sample data, and create a Fishbone diagram for root cause analysis

Day 3 — Improve and Control Phases, and Examination
Morning Session (4 Hours) — Improve and Control Phases
  • Objective: understand the Improve and Control phases and the role of a Yellow Belt in sustaining improvements.
  • Improve phase: brainstorming solutions, and generating potential solutions for process problems
  • Simple solutions implementation: how small changes can lead to big improvements
  • Control phase: standardisation and the importance of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in maintaining improvements
  • Control plans: tools to monitor and sustain improvements
  • Control charts: continued use to ensure the process stays within control limits
  • Practical Exercise: Work on a control plan for a sample process, ensuring that improvements are sustained over time
  • The morning session closes with a short recap of the full DMAIC methodology and the key Lean Six Sigma tools covered (SIPOC, Pareto Analysis, Fishbone Diagram, Control Charts, and others), together with a final Q&A to address any questions before the exam.
Afternoon Session (3 Hours) — The Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt Exam
  • The exam consists of multiple-choice and short-answer questions based on the material covered during the course, including the Define, Measure, Analyse, Improve, and Control phases, as well as key Lean Six Sigma tools and techniques.

Certification and Accreditation

  • International Certification: Upon successfully completing the exam, candidates receive a Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt Certification with International Accreditation from the Council for Six Sigma Certification (CSSC), USA. No project submission is required for this certification.
  • CSSC Accreditation: The certification awarded by the Council for Six Sigma Certification (CSSC) is globally recognised, and demonstrates that the candidate has a foundational understanding of Lean Six Sigma and is equipped to contribute to process improvement initiatives.

Post-Training Support (Optional)

  • Ongoing Learning: Access to resources for continuous improvement and further learning in Lean Six Sigma, along with recommendations for advancing to Green Belt or higher levels.

Training Materials & Tools

  • Workbook and Slides: a comprehensive workbook covering the core Lean Six Sigma tools and concepts.
  • Software Tools: Microsoft Excel for data analysis, along with templates for creating process maps and control plans.
  • Templates: templates for project charters, SIPOC diagrams, Pareto analysis, and control charts.
