Course Introduction

The PMI Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP)® is a globally recognised certification from the Project Management Institute (PMI)®. It validates a practitioner’s knowledge of agile principles, practices, and tools, and their ability to apply them across the agile approaches used in practice, such as Scrum, Kanban, Lean, Extreme Programming (XP), and the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe). It suits product owners, Scrum Masters, agile coaches, team leads, and project managers who work in agile environments.

This four-day course prepares participants for the PMI-ACP® exam. It follows the four domains of the current PMI-ACP® Exam Content Outline: Mindset, Leadership, Product, and Delivery. Participants work through realistic scenarios, practise the agile techniques the exam tests, build their skills with daily quizzes, and finish with a timed mock exam and a review of exam strategy. Attendance also contributes to the formal agile training that PMI requires of exam candidates.

The course uses study material developed and maintained by PMI®. The exam fee and PMI membership are not included.

Course Objectives

By the end of this PMI-ACP® course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the agile mindset, values, and principles, and how agile differs from traditional, predictive project management
  • Compare Scrum, Kanban, Lean, XP, and SAFe, and choose the right approach for a given situation
  • Lead and empower agile teams, build psychological safety, and resolve problems and conflict
  • Engage customers and stakeholders, and manage their expectations through transparency and early feedback
  • Define a product vision, and refine, prioritise, and manage a product backlog and its increments
  • Plan releases and iterations, and manage work and flow with visual tools
  • Use agile metrics, such as velocity, burndown, and lead time, to manage delivery
  • Manage impediments and risk, reduce waste, and drive continuous improvement through retrospectives
  • Answer PMI-ACP®-style exam questions with confidence, and apply effective exam strategies

Eligibility for the PMI-ACP® Exam

The course is open to anyone who wants to strengthen their agile practice. To sit the PMI-ACP® exam with PMI, candidates must have:

  • A secondary qualification, such as a Matric (Grade 12), a high school diploma, or the global equivalent
  • Formal training in agile practices, frameworks, and methodologies; attending this course contributes to this requirement
  • Agile experience, shown in one of these ways: 2 years of agile experience within the last 5 years; or a current PMP® certification; or a third-party agile certification plus 1 year of agile experience; or a degree from a Global Accreditation Center (GAC) accredited programme plus 1 year of agile experience

The PMI-ACP® exam has 120 questions (20 of them unscored) and lasts 3 hours, with one 10-minute break. It is recommended that candidates schedule the exam within three months of completing the course, while the knowledge is fresh. Full details on how to apply are covered in the course and on the PMI® website.
